JESSICA KUTOK ON MANAGING HER TIME

Time.

It’s one of the biggest things I’ve always struggled with as an entrepreneur… especially as a freelance copywriter.

Constantly fighting the clock, never feeling like I had enough hours in my day to do the things I wanted to do, not being able to take on more clients or skyrocket my business in the way I wanted to because I just never had the time.

Becoming a freelance writer sort of happened by accident. After applying for an SEO job with a start-up marketing company, they recognized I had a stronger skill in writing and so began a year-long partnership writing web-copy, blog content, and press releases for their clients.

As I started writing for them, I was also working 9-5 in a dead end job I couldn’t stand. Plus, I was over-exerting myself, waking up at 5AM to finish off a couple of freelance writing projects, getting ready for my day job, sitting there wishing I was at home working on my own business, commuting home, making dinner, doing the dishes, writing a little more for my freelance client, and then going to bed only to wake up and do it all over again.

So like I said at the beginning, time. I was constantly fighting the clock and the worst part was, I wasn’t getting anywhere.

If anything, I was entering a scary territory where my anxiety was getting out of control. I felt completely trapped in my day job and I was starting to realize I was overworked and underpaid with my freelance client.

I knew something needed to change ASAP.

So I raised my rates with my client. It worked… but the result was pathetic.

I was still stuck in my 9-5.

My working hours were increasing. I was working from around 5am-11pm at night most days.

I was getting more work out of my freelance client than ever.

Still completely underpaid. Under-valued.

I was hitting almost a breaking point and this is when things really changed for me and my success as a freelancer.

Beyond exhausted and fed-up with feeling taken advantage of by my client and trapped in mind-numbing work at my desk job, I made a life-changing decision.

I was going to start my own copywriting business and I was going to start finding clients right then and there.

Pretty soon, I created Jessica Kutok Copywriting Services and my mindset completely shifted into a confident and positive place.

I was going to make this work if it killed me.

So what did I do?

I opened up my Facebook & Instagram business pages, started investing in ads, reached out to potential clients, going to the odd networking event, and building relationships.

The growth I experienced in my business was, at the time, completely unexpected.

People actually wanted to pay me money to write for them?

Amazing.

I did some math and compared to when I was working for my one freelance client to working for

multiple clients, I grew my business by 500% within 6 months.

But, here’s the thing.

When you’re building your business, you need to plan your time accordingly.

If not, you’ll be fast-tracking your way to burn out, nevermind low quality work and a decrease in customer satisfaction.

This is NOT good for business or your personal self-care.

When I was first starting to balance both, and even sometimes now as a business coach, I struggle with time. I want to have my hands in everything and I feel like if I’m not engaging around the clock, my business will suffer.

Not true.

When I’m not being so controlling, there are three things I did (and still do) regularly that increased my efficiency, maximized my time, and helped with my own personal well-being.

 Content calendar creation

 Abiding by my own set work schedule

 Batching or time-blocking

When I would follow these 3 productivity hacks as a copywriter, my business would thank me. I’d have more time working on actual projects with my customers and more time engaging with potential clients.

I didn’t have to spend as much time writing social media posts, or my own blog content, and I wouldn’t feel obligated to interrupt my own personal free-time with work obligations or “one quick email”.

Okay, so I know it’s really hard to manage your time effectively when you’re just starting out, but you have to listen very carefully to me.

If you don’t utilize simple productivity hacks like the ones above and if you don’t take some time to yourself, your business is going to suffer.

And you really don’t want to do that. Trust me.

I’ve made these mistakes so you don’t have to.
